May 1943: RAF rear gunner Sgt Stan Fawson fights off a prowling Luftwaffe Junkers Ju 88C-6 nightfighter that is threatening his 221 Squadron Vickers Wellington Mk IC as it returns from a bombing raid on Catania harbour in Sicily. The nightfighter, probably from I. or II./NJG 2, made off into the night. The Coastal Command 'Wimpy', AD603, DF-J, returned safely to base at Luqa in Malta.
This picture was commissioned by Sgt (later Group Captain) Fawson's son.
