Artist's Description
Under clear skies and a bright three quarters moon, Lancaster Mk I, LL743/AS-U of No 166 Squadron falls prey to a German nightfighter during the RAF attack on the German military base at Mailly-le-Camp in France on the night of 3/4 May 1944. Two of the crew were killed and another four became prisoners of war. Wireless Operator Bill Viollet escaped from the top hatch of the burning aircraft, descended by parachute and joined the French Resistance until he linked up with US troops after D-Day.
My picture was commissioned by a friend of Bill's.
