Description
Shamrock 201, a F-4J Phantom of VMFA-333 scores the only aerial kill (on a VPAF MiG 21) by a USMC aircraft, 11th September 1972.
Flown by Major Lee Lasseter, with Captain John Cummings in the rear seat the pair engaged up to six MiGs in the engagement with a confirmed kill on one and a possible on a second. Low on fuel as they returned to their carrier the USS America they were hit by a SAM and the plane destroyed. Both the crew ejected successfully and were picked up by rescue helicopters.

As I remember listening to a debrief, it was his seventh missile that got the MiG!
Pete Wenman replied:
Hi Thomas - yes indeed the 7th missile - four AIM-7 Sparrows and two AIM-9 Siderwinders all missed. Just as shown here with the 7th missile making the hit, and the last missile still on the rack. I've a copy of an audio recording of the engagement that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time I listen to it. regards P
