Artist's Description

My depiction of the Mk V Spitfire that fighter ace Wing Commander Bob Stanford Tuck was flying when he was finally brought down by ground fire while attacking German troops in France in January 1942, becoming a prisoner-of-war.

Tuck joined the RAF in 1935 and fought through the Battle of France in Spitfires with No 92 Squadron before being promoted to Squadron Leader at No 257 Squadron during the height of the Battle of Britain, flying Hurricanes. In July 1941 he was made Wing Leader at RAF Duxford from where, back in Spitfires, he led fighter sweeps into northern France. On one of these on 28 January 1942 his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire and forced to land. He remained a POW for three years until finally managing to escape and eventually making his way back to England via Moscow.
