Description
Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1a R6596 portrayed in August 1940 configuration as QJ-S of No 92 Squadron RAF as flown by Alan Wright. Meticulously researched for a commission. On its matt, early-war camouflage colours, this aircraft had an unusually large and non-standard roundel on the fuselage.
All Wright's aircraft were coded QJ-S. This one, production number 686, was built at Eastleigh in May 1940 and assigned to 92 Squadron on 4 June, when Wright first flew it. It was shot up in a fight with Me Bf 109s on September 9 and "damaged enough to warrant extensive repairs".
After repair and service with other units it was eventually struck off charge in 1944, having crash landed following a mid-air collision with another Spitfire.
