Description
The Hawker Typhoon (Tiffy in RAF slang) was designed by the legendary Sydney Camm as an interceptor but did not live up to expectations except at low altitude against the Luftwaffe's Focke-Wulf Fw 190. But from 1943 it evolved into a fearsome ground-attack aircraft, cleared to carry two 500lb and later 1,000lb bombs, or up to eight rocket projectiles.
The picture depicts Typhoons from No. 247 (China British) Squadron, sporting D-Day invasion stripes, beginning an attack dive in June 1944.
