Description
A low-level portrait of the Type 464 (Provisioning) Lancaster bomber of 617 Squadron ED906/G AJ-J for Johnny - codename Cooler 5 - whose Barnes Wallis-designed Upkeep 'bouncing bomb' finally smashed the Mohne Dam on 17 May 1943. Pilot David Maltby, Flight engineer William Hatton, Navigator Vivian Nicholson, Wireless operator Antony Stone, Bomb aimer John Fort, Front gunner Victor Hill, Rear gunner Harold Simmonds. The crew returned from this operation but were lost that summer.
